The Main Central Vertical Flow is the source of our life energy. This pathway runs down the center of the front of the body and back up the spine. Jin Shin Jyutsu works like “jumper cables” to recharge the “life battery.”
Harmonizing the Main Central regularly helps you feel centered and ensures that you will have plenty of energy. Some people find it calming and use it to fall asleep, while others like to use it to clear away the cobwebs upon awakening. Consciously take it with you throughout the day. I like to think of it as my “American Express Flow,” and I never leave home without it!
For optimum results, do this self-help process daily, leaving your hands in the described positions for 2-5 minutes, or until the pulse synchronizes:
Step 1. Place right finger, fingers or palm on top center of head, where they will remain until step 6 (R1). Place left fingers between eyebrows (L1).

Step 2. Move left fingers to the tip of your nose (L2).
Revitalizes superficial body energy circulation, releases tension in the pelvic girdle and reproductive organs.
Step 3. Move left fingers to between the breasts on the sternum (L3).
Revitalizes the immune system for the prevention of cancer, AIDS, and other critical conditions. Assists in child growth and mental development. Governs reproductive, generative, and regenerative functions. Relieves nausea and assists with breathing.
Step 4. Move left fingers to base of sternum (L4).
Revitalizes the energy path of the spleen and adrenals, assists in the secretion of digestive juices and hormones, including digitalis and blood coagulation properties. Gateway to the solar energy system revitalizing the nervous system, prevents diabetes, etc. The controller of Human Destiny. Revitalizes the Source of Life energy, both ascending (front) and descending (back).
Step 5. Move left fingers to top of the pubic bone (L5).
Revitalizes descending Source of Life energy. Helps strengthen the spine.
Step 6. Replace the right hand to the base of the spine (coccyx); leave left fingers on top of pubic bone. The palm or back of the right hand may be applied; whichever is more comfortable for you (R2).
Revitalizes the ascending Source of Life energy. Helps energy circulation of the legs and feet.
As you begin doing the Main Central, lighten up. Quietly urge your body to relax. Give all thoughts and attitudes a break. Let it all go. Just simply Be.
“Listen” to what your hands/fingers are feeling or saying to you. Soon, you’ll begin to feel your pulse. When your pulse becomes rhythmic, synchronized and of equal intensity, your energy in that particular area has begun to flow as it normally would in a state of optimum health. Feeling this, you may move on to the next set in the sequence.
Breathe into your deepening relaxation. “Receive” each breath with gratitude. Gently tell your body to “relax” while exhaling. Let your breath take you into your bodily rhythms as you hold onto these positions. With each exhale imagine energy flowing down your front and upon your inhale feel your energy rise up the back. Down and up again, over and over, repeating with each breath another cycle of this precious moment of your life.
